National Preparedness Month– September 2026

September is National Preparedness Month, a great reminder that being prepared can make all the difference when something unexpected happens. At Kurtz, we work around heavy equipment, changing conditions, and busy operations, so taking time to plan ahead is an important part of keeping ourselves and our coworkers safe.
Emergencies can happen at any time, whether it’s severe weather, an equipment breakdown, a workplace injury, or an unexpected interruption to operations. Knowing what to do before an emergency occurs can help reduce confusion, prevent injuries, and protect our team.
Here are a few ways to stay prepared at work and at home:
- Know your emergency plan: Understand your site’s emergency procedures, evacuation routes, shelter locations, and designated meeting areas.
- Be prepared for severe weather: Keep an eye on weather forecasts, especially during storms, high winds, extreme temperatures, and winter weather. Know where to seek shelter and follow instructions from supervisors during severe weather events.
- Check your safety equipment: Know where fire extinguishers, first aid kits, spill kits, emergency shutoffs, and other safety equipment are located. Make sure you know how to use them properly.
- Keep emergency contacts handy: Know who to contact in an emergency and how to report an incident, equipment issue, or hazardous condition.
- Prepare for power outages and disruptions: Have flashlights, batteries, water, basic first aid supplies, and other emergency essentials available at home and in designated workplace emergency kits.
- Stay aware of changing conditions: Weather and jobsite conditions can change quickly. Take a moment to assess the situation and speak up if something doesn’t look safe.
- Practice your plan: Take time to review emergency procedures with your team so everyone knows what to do and where to go if an emergency occurs.
Preparedness is everyone’s responsibility. A little planning today can help prevent injuries, protect our coworkers, and keep our operations running safely—even when the unexpected happens.
