Staying Safe Around Electricity in the Workplace

Electrical safety is everyone’s responsibility. Each year, countless workplace injuries are caused by electrical hazards—many of them preventable. This month, we’re highlighting the importance of awareness, training, and proactive safety practices to reduce the risk of electrical accidents on the job.

Why Electrical Safety Matters

Even everyday tasks can expose workers to dangerous voltage levels, especially when equipment is damaged, procedures aren’t followed, or hazards go unrecognized. Electrical injuries can include:

  • Electric shock and burns
  • Arc flashes (electrical explosions)
  • Fires caused by faulty equipment
  • Falls due to shock or arc blasts

Key Electrical Safety Principles

  • Never assume power is off. Always test before you touch.
  • De-energize equipment before working on it.
  • Use lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and verify de-energization.
  • Only qualified personnel should work on or near energized systems.
  • Unqualified workers must stay at least 10 feet away from live power sources.

Qualified vs. Unqualified

Qualified Workers are:

  • Trained to identify and avoid electrical hazards.
    • Skilled in reading electrical schematics and using specialized tools.
  • Trained to use PPE and perform work near or on energized equipment safely.

Unqualified Workers should:

  • Never perform electrical work.
  • Always maintain a safe distance.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions.

Best Practices for a Safer Workplace

  • 🔌 Use insulated tools and equipment when working near electricity.
  • 🧤 Wear the right PPE—such as arc-rated clothing, gloves, and eye protection.
  • 🧯 Know your emergency procedures, including where the shut-off switches and first aid kits are located.
  • 🚧 Keep work areas tidy to reduce trip hazards and ensure quick access to exits and equipment.
  • 🔍 Inspect all equipment before use and report any damage immediately.
  • ⚠️ Use Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) in damp or wet environments.
  • 🧰 Use non-conductive ladders around electrical systems.
  • 💍 Remove all metal jewelry before working near energized systems.

  • Arcing incidents can reach temperatures hotter than the sun and result in fatal injuries.
  • Electrocution remains one of the “Fatal Four” leading causes of death in construction.

  • If you’re not qualified—don’t touch it. If you’re unsure—speak up. Safety starts with awareness, training, and a shared commitment to protecting ourselves and our teammates.
